Some Facts
Sometimes your car behavior is changing and you are not noticing. The result is that, you are consuming more fuel. Your car's manufacturer knows how many Miles Per Gallons/ Kilometer Per Gallon (MPG/ KPG) your car can consume. But do you know that you can validate these benchmarks?
There are many factors that influence your higher consumption. But will not judge the causes in this blog. We are going to see a few lines about your car performance that will help you to understand why you need to start compiling data of your car. Therefore you will need download my Excel MPG Calculator.

Car Performance
We need to measure our vehicle performance based on 2 elements: 1) The Fuel Consumed and 2) The Distance Ran.
I use to talk to friends who are comparing their car performance base on the fuel duration in their tank. I.e. "I use 1 full tank to for 2 weeks driving downtown going to work and come back home". This is not the best way to measure how much money the Arabs are getting from your pocket in 2 weeks.
Without pretending to be a mechanic-man, I can affirm that different factors influence your car performance:
Driving habit: hard accelerating while you will have to stop at the next corner or the hooligan driving style is ruining your pocket. We all know how to drive like a good citizen. So let's encourage waking up and leaving home early enough be on time at the office.
Fuel type: running your car on different fuel type with different octane level can cause higher consumption (95, 90, Super, etc.)
Loading capacity: giving ride to all your family member going to that dinner does not save you money. The next time, tell your cousins that you are sorry. You can't any longer fit them all 6 in your car.
Tire/size pressure: low pressured tired create force retention to your car
So far, these are the basic rules to save a few thousands dollars a year on fuel.

Now that we have our benchmark, let's challenge our neighbor who brags too much his 1980 Toyota that does not burn fuel. If you win, the only risk is that you might not be invited to his Christmas party. Let's hope he will not be mad.
Now, without pretending to be a programmer, Click the download arrow or file below to download the Excel MPG Calculator and enjoy.
Instructions:
You have 2 sheets in the downloaded workbook one named Performance and the other named Data
Data Sheet
Print the Data sheet (the second sheet), fold it in four pieces following the lines and keep it in your car's glove box with a pencil
Use the printed Data sheet as log to write down the following information when you are at the gas station:
Refill Date, Mileage (ODO) and Quantity of fuel
Performance sheet:
On the top row enter your car Make, Model and Year. (This is to identify your car type when you mail it back later)
The Chart: we will talk about it later
Below the chart, check "MPG" if your car is in Mile and "KPG" if your car is in Kilometer. Your average MPG or KPG will be shown next to them
Now using the main sheet, Performance, enter your mileage when you first filled up in the "ODO Start" cell. It does not matter the date or quantity for the moment. All we want is a starting point
Enter the price per gallon in the "Fuel Cost" cell
Then, in the table below this row, enter the next time you filed up your car
Consecutively enter data for your Refill Date, ODO and Qty Refilled
The more you fill out information, your MPG or KPG will calculate line by line. The more line you have, your AVERAGE MPG/KPG will update. Each line of MPG will highlight in red meaning that your performance is under the average for your own car. The chart will update based on your entered data. The blue line is your fuel performance over the time and the green dots your cost performance.
You can judge the causes of your high or poor car performance. But this is something personal. But you need to remember that not only your every mile is costing you some an amount of dollars but also every time you hit the gas pedal for nothing or let the car idle for nothing, this is having large impact on your miles and cost performance. For now you can say that your car is performing highly well by using scientific numbers MPG/ KPG (Miles Per Gallon/ Kilometer Per Gallon).
NOTE: This analysis tool works under the presumption that you fill up completely your vehicle tank each time.
